Imaging services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London have been awarded ISAS (Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme) accreditation.

This patient-focused assessment and accreditation programme is run by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS). It provides a framework for diagnostic imaging services to ensure that patients consistently receive high quality services, delivered by competent staff working in safe environments.

ISAS is acknowledged by the Care Quality Commission as a robust accreditation scheme and it is now part of hospital inspection methodology.

Paul Stennett, Chief Executive of UKAS, presented a certificate of accreditation at a celebration event on Tuesday 11 October.

He said: “Congratulations to the imaging teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London. Meeting the rigorous requirements of the ISAS standard enables the Trust and university to promote best practice in the four key areas of patient experience, clinical effectiveness, effective utilisation of resources, and patient and staff safety. It demonstrates a commitment to providing patients with a high quality, effective and safe service.”

Part of the assessment for accreditation involved a three-day day inspection by 10 imaging experts. The recurrent theme in the assessors’ feedback was how impressed they were with what they saw. They said that staff were a "friendly team", "very patient-focused" and "approachable".

The assessors described some aspects of our imaging services as "exemplary" and concluded that the service is "exceptionally safe".

Professor Andy Adam, Clinical Director of the Clinical Imaging and Medical Physics Directorate at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Our directorate and the division of imaging sciences at King’s College London have an excellent relationship that delivers outstanding results for patients, as well as being very productive academically.

“ISAS accreditation is wonderful recognition of the high standards achieved by this relationship and an appropriate reward for the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of clinical, academic and administrative staff.”

Professor Reza Razavi, Director of Research, King's Health Partners and Assistant Principal (Research and Innovation), King's College London, agreed: “The culture of continuous improvement which builds on the great work being done in the Transforming Outcomes and Health Economics through Imaging (TOHETI) programme should ensure that we can build on this accreditation and our Imaging Services will continue getting better year on year.”
