Community staff success at Lammy Awards

Friday 16 September 2016

A community physiotherapist and a nursing assistant have won recognition at the Lammy Awards for their outstanding contribution to health and social care in Lambeth.

The awards, which are run by NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), honour individuals and teams nominated by the public.

Award winners were announced on Wednesday 7 September.

Mike Lee, a physiotherapist from the Lambeth Supported Discharge and Rapid Response Team, won the Putting Patients First Award.

Mike’s nomination said that he ‘worked with care, kindness and humour to get an 81-year-old man on his feet and using public transport after being bed-bound following a five-week hospital stay’.

Mike's role is to rebuild patients' confidence and capability to live independently and safely.

Marcia Speed, a nursing assistant, won the Kindness Award. Marcia ‘gained the trust of a vulnerable man who visited his mother, a resident at Minnie Kidd House, every day from 2014 until she died this year following a massive stroke. The man was unkempt and in need of a shower, clean clothes and proper food. Marcia discreetly regularly arranged this for him always mindful of his dignity and his privacy. He felt comfortable and grateful for the support’.

Angela Dawe, Director of Operations and Strategic Development - Adult Local Services, says: "It's wonderful that Mike and Marcia's kindness, commitment and dedication to our patients has been acknowledged at these awards.

"They are great examples of how, by putting patients first, we can achieve the best possible joined-up care for local people."
