Consultant orthopaedic and spine surgeon

Biography

Jonathan Lucas was appointed as consultant orthopaedic and spinal consultant at Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 1999.

Jonathan is head of service for children's spinal surgery, Evelina London Children’s Hospital having been lead clinician for spinal surgery from 2007 to 2019 at Guy's and St Thomas'.

Jonathan is a former Chairman of AO SPINE UK. He is a member of the:

  • British Association of Spine Surgeons
  • British Scoliosis Society
  • European Spine Society
  • North American Spine Society
  • British Orthopaedic Association

Education and training

Jonathan qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University in 1988.

He undertook basic surgical training on the St Bartholomew’s Hospital rotation gaining fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England FRCS(Eng) in 1992.

He pursued higher surgical orthopaedic training on the south east Thames orthopaedic rotation gaining the FRCS(Orth&Tr) in 1998.

He gained specialist training in spinal surgery as a fellow at The Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and as a British Orthopaedic Association travelling fellow to the USA, specialising in children's and adult deformity surgery. 

Publications

Jonathan is the editor of the New Aird’s Companion to Surgery and a contributor to 5 other books as chapter author, including Critical Care Medicine at a Glance, and French’s Index of Differential Diagnosis, an A-Z.

He is author of over 45 peer reviewed publications and presentations.
