Overview

General internal medicine

We provide care for adults in hospital with a range of conditions.

The service includes:

  • acute admissions ward (acute medicine unit)
  • inpatient internal medicine wards
  • same day emergency care (SDEC)
  • outpatients

Most people we see have a health problem that started suddenly. They are often admitted to hospital through our emergency department (A&E), or may be admitted directly from our SDEC or from outpatients.

On the ward, you'll see a team of:

  • doctors and physician associates
  • nurses, nursing associates and healthcare support workers
  • therapists
  • pharmacists

You may be able to go home the same or following day. Where appropriate, this may be with follow-up in SDEC, the hospital at home team, or in outpatients.

If you need to stay in hospital you'll move to:

There are many health conditions that our team look after when you first come into hospital.

If further specific specialist care for your condition is needed, we'll contact them to arrange this. They may provide input during your stay, or may take over your care whilst you're in hospital and after you've gone home.

Wards

Sometimes you may be on another ward and looked after by our general medicine team.

Our consultants

Our consultants work across a variety of services.

Research and clinical trials

Research is vital to improving the care that you receive when you're unwell. You can help improve healthcare by taking part in research studies at our Trust. During your appointment, ask your healthcare professional about research. They'll be happy to tell you about research studies you could be eligible to join.
