Coronavirus: radiology services update

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, please read our advice and information before sending any referrals.

Please be advised we no longer accept some NHS GP referrals via our email address, please see below guidance on referring individual scan types via the NHS e-Referral service (eRS).   

Please be advised that the eRS system utilises a ‘dummy’ appointment purely for administrative purposes. This does not correlate to a booked appointment. The radiology administrative team will contact patients in order to arrange appointments or can be contacted directly via the number above.

GP referrals

To make a referral to our radiology service, please see the sections below.

  • X-rays

    Please complete the x-ray referral form (Word 163Kb) and email it to when referring patients for x-ray imaging. The subject header of your email must include your patient's surname, first name and date of birth. This is a walk in service and no appointments are provided.

    Barium/swallow/meal/enema are a separate service and you must request these using the NHS e-Referral Service (eRS).

The following tests require an appointment:

  • barium swallow and enema scans (fluoroscopy)
  • breast ultrasound (breast referrals need to be sent directly to the breast unit via eRS)
  • CT
  • MRI (cardiac MRI requests must be emailed to cardiology at
  • ultrasound
  • ultrasound uterine embolisation (please email

Urgent / two week wait referrals

For urgent requests, please send via the route defined above, and indicate clearly that the request is urgent.

Referral forms

Clinical details must be legible and the examination requested must be clearly printed.

  • Information required

    • To avoid unnecessary delays for the patient, please ensure that request forms clearly show the patient's name, date of birth, address and contact number.
    • Please ensure all referrer information is complete including GMC number.
    • Please ensure that the form is signed, electronic signatures will be accepted.
    • For relevant patients confirmation is required of patient pregnancy status.
    • Up to date blood test results must be provided for all CT and MRI requests as well as Ultrasound biopsy.
    • For MRI referrals details of any metal implants or pacemakers must be included.
    • Overseas patients must be clearly identified.

Rererral criteria

    • Breast cancer referrals – please send to the breast cancer service.
    • Nuclear medicine and DEXA scans – please refer to the nuclear medicine service.
    • PET scans – these need to be be sent directly to the PET service.
    • Ultrasonic angiology referrals – please send to the angiology service.
    • We no longer accept fax referrals
    • We no longer accept general radiology referrals via our email address.
