Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions we have received during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. 

  • How do I contact the stroke department?

    Contact us by telephone on 020 7188 2515. Use this number if:

    • you need to urgently discuss your clinical condition
    • you do not have access to email or our website.

    If you leave a message it may be a few days before we are able to respond.

  • I have been referred but have not heard anything

    We have received your referral which is being vetted by our clinical team and we will be in touch with you within the next 24 hours.

  • I am worried I might have coronavirus (COVID-19)

    Please call NHS 111 for advice.

  • I am on medication prescribed by your team and am not sure if I should stop taking it

    Do not stop any medication unless specifically told to do so by your clinical team. 

  • I have an appointment soon and I have not heard from you

    We are attempting to contact all patients in advance of your appointment.

    If you are attending for a follow-up appointment it is likely that this will be changed to a telephone or video consultation.

    If you have not heard from us and your appointment is less than three days away, please contact us as detailed on our website.

  • I have symptoms I'm worried about

    If the symptoms are related to the condition for which we are seeing you and you need specific clinical advice from our team please contact us as detailed above.

    If at any time before your appointment you experience a new onset of symptoms, it is a medical emergency, dial 999 immediately, do no wait for your appointment.

    What are the symptoms of TIA?

    The key symptoms of a stroke or TIA can by recognised by the acronym 'FAST'.

    • Facial weakness: can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
    • Arm weakness: c an the person raised both arms?
    • Speech problem: can the person speak clearly and understand what someone is saying to them?
    • Time to call 999: if any of the symptoms are seen, it is a medical emergency, call an ambulance immediately.
  • My medication is running out and I need a prescription

    If the medication is usually prescribed by your GP contact the surgery. If we usually prescribe your medication, please contact us as detailed on our website (use email unless your request is urgent).
