Overview

Aroma sticks in cancer care

An aroma stick (also known as an aromatherapy inhaler) is a personal inhaler device that fits in your pocket. It contains an inner cotton wick that has drops of essential oils added to it, so you can use aromatherapy whenever you need it.

Essential oil inhalation and aroma sticks have been used successfully in cancer care settings across the UK to ease symptoms such as:

  • anxiety
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • sleep problems (insomnia)

Your aroma stick is safe to use as often as you like, and there are no known side effects.

An aroma stick is not a replacement for any medicine.

How to get an aroma stick

Aroma sticks are provided by Dimbleby Cancer Care, and are for eligible patients with a cancer diagnosis. Speak to your healthcare team if you would like to be referred to the service.

Following a consultation with a complementary therapist, your aroma stick will be prepared with carefully selected essential oils. Your therapist will consider any health needs, allergies or smell preferences you might have.

How they work

Each aroma stick contains a blend of essential oils chosen by your complementary therapist. These oils can help improve your wellbeing and quality of life by helping with your symptoms.

When inhaled, the aromas work quickly to affect how you feel. The aim of each blend is to encourage a sense of comfort and safety.

How to use an aroma stick

1. Unscrew the outer cap.

2. Hold or wave the aroma stick just under your nose and take 3 gentle breaths.

3. Breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth.

Do not insert the aroma stick into your nose.

When to use an aroma stick

Use your aroma stick as often as you want. You can use it when you need relief from your symptoms. Using it with any form of relaxation exercises can increase the benefits.

How long they last

Aroma sticks last up to 6 months. It is important to keep the outer cap screwed on tightly when you're not using it. This stops the essential oils from evaporating too quickly.

Aroma stick safety

Your aroma stick is for your use only. It should not be shared with others.

Aroma sticks are not a replacement for medicine. They are intended to complement your medical treatment, not be used as an alternative.

If you have any negative effects, stop using the aroma stick immediately and contact your complementary therapist.

Do not place the aroma stick near an oxygen cylinder, piped oxygen, oxygen masks, or nasal tubing while oxygen is in use.

You can dispose of the aroma stick in your household waste.
