Monitoring you on exclusive enteral nutrition
Exclusive enteral nutrition using a liquid nutritional supplement
Exclusive enteral nutrition is a prescribed liquid diet that we recommend for some people with inflammatory bowel disease. This diet:
- can improve inflammation in the gut if used as your only source of nutrition for about 6 weeks
- gives you all the nutrients that you need during this time
Throughout the time that you are on exclusive enteral nutrition, we monitor your:
- wellbeing
- nutritional status (your health condition as influenced by your diet)
You may need to come for more hospital appointments during this time. Your gastroenterologist may also want to do more tests to check your progress.
Some of your monitoring with the dietitian can take place by phone or email.
Your weight and nutritional needs
If your weight is stable within the healthy weight range, the aim while you are on a liquid diet is to maintain your weight.
For some people who are underweight, we hope to help you gain weight. If you lose weight while on the liquid diet, please tell your dietitian.
If you have access to some scales, please weigh yourself once a week. In the following document, there is a chart for you to record each weight measurement and tables for your dietitian to record your nutritional needs:
Personalised 3-day build-up plan
Your dietitian completes the tables in the following document. This gives you a personalised plan for building up to take the fully prescribed amount of the liquid nutritional supplement over 3 days:
