Having an FMT by capsules

If your doctor has recommended that you have an FMT by capsules, your appointment will be in the department of infectious diseases at St Thomas' Hospital.

Before your appointment

There is no bowel preparation or special diet for having an FMT by capsules.

Do not eat or drink for at least 4 hours before your appointment. You can still drink clear fluids such as water or squash.

Stop any antibiotic treatment you are taking at least 48 hours before taking the capsules.

During your appointment

We'll give you 5 capsules at your appointment. Take them with water or squash.

You can leave hospital after you take the capsules. You do not need to stay in hospital afterwards.

After your appointment

You can return to eating normally 30 minutes after taking the capsules.
