Having Grazax treatment

Grazax hay fever treatment

Starting Grazax treatment

If your healthcare team recommends Grazax for you, you’ll have an appointment with an allergy nurse specialist. This appointment takes about 1 hour.

Timing

The most effective time to start treatment is about 4 months before the grass pollen season starts. We’ll schedule your appointment during this time.

Giving your permission (consent)

At the appointment, we’ll discuss the treatment with you. If you decide to have the treatment, we’ll ask you to complete a consent form. Talk to us if you have any questions or concerns.

Taking your first tablet

We’ll do some tests to check your:

  • pulse
  • blood pressure
  • blood oxygen level
  • how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs (peak flow)

You’ll take your first Grazax tablet during the appointment. We’ll monitor you for 30 minutes after you take the tablet.

We’ll do the tests again to check how your body is responding to the medicine.

If there are issues with your test results, we might not be able to start your Grazax treatment straight away. We’ll discuss what your options are during the appointment.

If there are no issues with your test results, we’ll give you your first 3-month supply of Grazax tablets from the hospital. You can continue taking them by yourself from now on.

Getting your prescription

You’ll need to collect your medicine regularly so you can continue taking Grazax for 3 years. We’ll discuss how to arrange this during your check-up appointments.

How to take Grazax

Grazax comes as a soft, light tablet. You put it under your tongue and let it dissolve. This is called a sublingual tablet.

Take 1 tablet around the same time each day.

Make sure your hands are dry before touching the tablet.

Carefully take the tablet out of its original packaging so it does not break. Put the tablet under your tongue straight away. It should dissolve. Keep it under your tongue for 1 to 2 minutes before swallowing

Do not put anything in your mouth for at least 5 minutes after taking Grazax. This includes food, drinks, cigarettes or vapes. This is to make sure that the tablet has completely dissolved.

If you forget to take Grazax

If you forget to take your Grazax tablet, take it as soon as you remember that day. Take your next tablet the day after at your usual time.

Important

Never take more than 1 tablet in the same day.

If you miss more than 6 days of your treatment, contact us as soon as possible. We’ll tell you how to start taking your Grazax again safely.

Appointments during treatment

Regular check-ups

You’ll need to attend regular check-up appointments during your treatment. At these appointments, we will:

  • check if you have any side effects
  • check your tolerance to grass pollen
  • check how well you’re responding to the treatment
  • check if there are any changes to your health conditions
  • discuss how you can get your next supply of Grazax tablets

Review appointment

After your first pollen season on Grazax, you’ll have a formal review appointment. We’ll ask you to fill in a questionnaire about your quality of life during your first pollen season on Grazax.

If your symptoms do not show significant improvement after 1 year of taking Grazax, we’ll discuss if you should continue treatment or not.

If Grazax is improving your symptoms, you’ll continue taking it daily for a total of 3 years.
