7 days before your VCE
Stop taking any medicines that contain:
- iron, including supplements you buy from a pharmacy or shop. These might list as ingredients: ferrous, ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate, and Sytron, Floradix®
- Buscopan®, mebeverine or Colofac®
- Imodium® or loperamine
- codeine or morphine
Keep taking all other medicines as usual.
If you take codeine or morphine and are concerned about being able to stop, please talk to your doctor.
These drugs affect the gut and if the instructions are not followed it could affect the procedure and results.
2 days before your VCE
- Keep taking all other medicines as usual
- Start having small meals and follow our food guide.
- Drink lots of fluids, try to have 2 litres (about 8 to 10 glasses) each day.
You can eat or drink:
- water, including flavoured water
- black tea or black coffee (no milk)
- soft drinks (including fizzy and energy drinks)
- chewing gum
- boiled sweets that are dissolved slowly
- clear soup or stock (no solids in it and not pureed)
- Bovril or Marmite as a hot drink (only 1 mug as it’s salty)
- clear fruit or vegetable juice with no bits
Do not eat or drink
- do not drink milk
- do not drink red or purple drinks
- do not drink alcohol
- do not eat any solid food after 8.30am breakfast on the day before your VCE
