All staff are Dementia Friends
Wednesday 7 May 2014
All 13,200 staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ have been recognised as Dementia Friends by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, aimed at raising awareness of dementia for one million people in England and encouraging them to change one thing to help people living with dementia.
Thanks to staff taking part in Barbara’s Story training sessions, the Alzheimer’s Society has recognised that staff understand what it is like to live with dementia, and put that understanding into action.
Barbara’s Story is a film that follows a fictional patient who has symptoms of dementia, and explores the challenges she faces when she comes into contact with NHS staff at home and in hospital.
Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse, says: “It’s an honour for everyone in the Trust to be named a Dementia Friend.
“Since Barbara’s Story launched, we have seen a very real change in the way staff carry out their jobs.”
