While many of us tucked into turkey and lounged in front of the TV, midwives at St Thomas’ Hospital helped with some extra special deliveries on Christmas Day.

Fourteen babies were born at the hospital on Monday – eight girls and six boys – between 1.55am and 9.55pm.

Parents Selamawit Tesfai and Marco Decarne, from Brixton, welcomed their daughter, Camilla, into the world at 6.30pm weighing 9 lb 7oz – the largest baby of the day.

Selamawit, who also has a two-year-old daughter called Sophia, said: “We knew she was going to be big but didn’t expect her to weigh this much, especially as she was born at 38 weeks.

“The same midwife who helped deliver Sophia two years ago was working on Boxing Day, which was a lovely surprise and made me feel at home.”

More than 6,600 babies are born at St Thomas’ Hospital each year.

Lynne Pacanowski, Director of Midwifery and Head of Gynaecology Nursing at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “It’s always extra special when babies are born on Christmas Day.”
