Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been awarded for providing the best education in healthcare, being at the forefront of change, and encouraging diversity in the workforce.

Three teams from the Trust were winners at the South London Recognition Awards, organised by the Health Education South London Membership Council, on Tuesday 22 October.

The adult safeguarding team won the award for best learning and development strategy for ‘Barbara’s Story’, an emotive film about a fictional patient living with dementia that raises staff awareness of this important area of care.

Deputy chief nurse Debbie Parker says: “We’re thrilled that ‘Barbara’s Story’ has won this award, especially as we have just premiered episodes two and three of the film, and our education training programme is being rolled out nationally.

“’Barbara’s Story’ has had such a positive impact on our staff. It is humbling to see how it has struck the heart of the organisation, and for this to be recognised in the wider healthcare community.”

The clinical education team won the award for best healthcare education and training programme for their projects to improve the learning experience of students and their mentors.

Amanda Price, head of education programmes, says: “The team have worked very hard to ensure all our students and mentors learn in the most rewarding environment, something the Trust takes great pride in.

“We hope our work will continue to improve the quality of our newly qualified staff, which will ultimately benefit patients.”

The third accolade was the award for widening participation initiative of the year, which was given to a number of teams who worked together to develop a diverse workforce and improve skills and education across the local community.

Staynton Brown, associate director of equality and human rights, says: “Through forging new partnerships with colleges, schools and charities, teams from Guy’s and St Thomas’ are pushing boundaries and creating innovative projects that have improved the skills and education of people who live locally.”

The South London Recognition Awards celebrate excellent work to develop a well trained, skilled and professional healthcare workforce across south London.
