Please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.

Before your appointment

Please bring:

  • your completed medical history form. We'll send this to you in the post before your appointment
  • a list of medicines you take

During your appointment

Your appointment will be with one of our maxillofacial prosthetists. They specialise in protheses for your condition.

We hold clinics from Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. They take place at floor 25, Tower Wing, Guy's Hospital, Great Maze Pond, London SE1 9RT.

How long your appointment takes depends on the treatment you need. This can range between 30 minutes to 2 hours. We'll let you know how long we expect your appointment to last before each treatment session.

At your first appointment we'll discuss your referral and medical history. We'll examine the area needing reconstruction with a prosthesis and discuss treatment options.

Future appointments may include:

  • taking impressions
  • carrying out wax trials of your prosthesis
  • colour matching of your prosthesis
  • fitting the prosthesis
  • reviewing the prosthesis

We're a teaching hospital. Students supervised by qualified staff might be involved in your care. It is valuable training for students and does not affect the quality of your treatment. Please tell us if you do not want them to be present or involved. We'll always respect your wishes.

After your appointment

We aim to help by giving:

  • advice about future appointments and any treatment needed
  • advice on looking after your prosthesis
  • information about other services you may find helpful. For example, support groups and complementary therapies

If you have a problem with your prosthesis or need general information, please contact us.

Patient initiated follow-up (PIFU)

If it's available for you, we'll ask if you want to be added to our list for patient initiated follow-up (PIFU) appointments.

This allows you to decide if you need to see us again for up to 1 year after you've been discharged from our service.

Booking a follow-up appointment

If you're on our PIFU appointment list, please contact us if your symptoms return or get worse.

Email: [email protected]

Phone: 020 7188 7188 extension 56449

Symptoms and reasons to book a follow-up appointment are:

  • if your keloid scars start to regrow. This may present with:
    • itching or tingling of the area
    • tightness of the splint
    • visible growth of the scar
  • if you decide to start wearing your nasal obturator and continue treatment

When you contact us about a follow-up appointment, you'll be assessed by a member of our team. We'll offer an appointment as appropriate.
