How to get an appointment

If you need to continue parenteral nutrition (PN) or IV fluid treatment after you leave hospital, you'll have an appointment with us.

The nutrition team will arrange this appointment for you.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

Please contact the nutrition nurse using the contact number you have for them. You can also contact the team by email.

Before your appointment

Your nutrition nurse will tell you when you need to come to the clinic.

If you cannot come to the appointment, or if you have recently become unwell, contact the nutrition nurse. Please use the contact number you have for them. We will give this to you when you leave hospital.

If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment we will not be able to see you. You will need to rearrange your appointment.

During your appointment

Your appointment will be face-to-face. Sometime you may have a telephone appointment

You will see a:

  • consultant
  • dietitian
  • pharmacist
  • nutrition nurse

At your appointment we will weigh you. You will also have a blood test.

We will discuss:

  • how much you eat and drink (your oral intake)
  • your fluid outputs
  • your weight
  • your blood test results
  • your prescription
  • management of the PN/IV fluid supply with the homecare company

We will also check your feeding line.

Your appointment will last 30 minutes.

After your appointment

You will receive a follow-up appointment for 3 to 6 months.
