Referrals

We accept referrals from GPs and other health professionals.

GP referrals

All NHS GP referrals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). Referrals sent by email or post from NHS GPs will not be processed.

Valve clinic referrals

Tertiary referrals

Tertiary referrals must be made on the Electronic Vetters Service (e-VS).

Please address your referral letter to one of our consultants.

Our consultants will triage your referral.

Referrals sent from other hospitals must include a completed inter-provider minimum data set. Please send one within 48 hours of the referral.

Referral criteria

We accept referrals for:

  • anyone with significant cardiac symptoms, or
  • a significant heart murmur

We do not accept referrals for:

  • people with a soft ejection systolic murmur and a well-heard second heart sound

Infective endocarditis referrals

Tertiary referrals

All referrals should be made by completing the infective endocarditis referrals form. Please email the form to [email protected]. The endocarditis team will review your referral.

If your referral is urgent, please call the on-call cardiology registrar via switchboard 020 7188 7188.

We welcome prompt referral of all cases of complicated confirmed or suspected infective endocarditis, especially in the following circumstances:

  • endocarditis with heart failure
  • endocarditis with severe valve incompetence
  • endocarditis with structural destruction (abscess, perforation or fistula formation)
  • prosthetic valve endocarditis
  • endocarditis with embolic or neurological complications
  • endocarditis in patients with an implantable cardiac device
  • staphylococcus aureus endocarditis
  • endocarditis not responding to medical therapy or caused by resistant organisms, such as fungi
  • blood culture negative endocarditis

Referral criteria

We accept referrals for people who have symptomatic or prognostic heart valve disease that needs intervention, or assessment for intervention.

Urgent referrals

If your patient needs an urgent transfer, please phone 020 7188 7188 and ask for the on-call cardiology team as well as sending a referral form.
