Ophthalmology research

About us

The Frost Eye research department at St Thomas' Hospital has a long tradition of excellence in research. Researchers at Guy's and St Thomas' have carried out some of the first trials of laser eye surgery and we are one of the leading NHS Trusts in the country for research.

Our department runs a variety of ophthalmology research into eye conditions from glaucoma, cornea, uveitis to retinal diseases. The rooms are designed specifically for clinical trials with features such as 'dark walls' for electroretinography (ERG) studies and has specialised equipment for a variety of investigations including lens research. The unit is the only one in Europe to have an aqueous dynamics laboratory. The department is known for its professional and friendly service and for putting patients first.

  • Glaucoma

    Aqueous dynamics and glaucoma surgery

    An observational study to look at the effects of glaucoma surgeries on aqueous dynamics (flow of loud through and out of the eye).


    A study comparing the effectiveness of phacoemulsification + ECP laser and phacoemulsification alone for the treatment of primary open angle glaucoma in patients with cataract.

  • Cataract

    Corneal Collagen Cross-linking

    A study to investigate the efficacy of tomography-orientated versus standard axial Roboflavin/Ultraviolet A Corneal Collagen Cross-linking.

    Improvement of cataract surgery

    An investigation of strategies to improve the efficiency and safety of cataract surgery within the NHS.


    A study to measure the posterior capsular opacification, objective measurement of glistenings and intraocular lens tilt and decentration following insertions of monofocal, aspheric, hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens.

    Toric IOL

    A study to compare visual performance, refractive outcome and patient satisfaction with the use of 'off the shelf' toric lenses.

    Patient satisfaction and dry symptoms undergoing uncomplicated cataract surgery

    A study to assess the use of prophylactic lubricant eye-drops following uncomplicated cataract surgery to improve patient satisfaction and symptoms.

  • Genetics

    Genetics of common age-related eye diseases

    Study of genetics of cataract, glaucoma and other common age-related eye diseases.

  • Medical retina

    Recording retinal responses

    A study to investigate the responses of retinal cell populations in normal individuals and patients with retinal disease by recording the electrogram.

  •  Uveitis


    A study to gather standardised set of clinical data which is shared anonymously between sites for the improvement of clinical care

  • Glaucoma

    LiGHT trial

    A study which showed that a laser treatment called selective laser trabeculoplasty should be offered to patients with open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, supporting a change in clinical practice. Read more about the LiGHT trial on the PubMed website.

    Hydrus 4 (Horizon)

    The study which showed the safety and effectiveness of a form of implant called Hydrus aqueous implant for lowering eye pressure in glaucoma patients.


    A study to which showed that a combination of a cataract surgery and laser technique is more effective than cataract surgery alone to treat patients with primary open angle glaucoma. Read more about PhacoECP on the SAGE journals website.

    Effect of Phacoemulsification on facility of outflow

    The study which showed that a cataract surgery increases the amount of fluid that can flow out of the eye which causes a lower pressure of the eye after surgery. Read more about the study on the BMJ website.

    Aqueous outflow facility after phacoemulsification with or without goniosynechialysis in primary angle closure

    A study in which patients had a new type of surgery that removes part of the cornea combined with standard cataract surgery. It showed these patients had significantly increased fluid flow from the eye and were less reliant on glaucoma medication. Read more about the study on the PubMed website.

    Aqueous dynamics and race

    A comparative study which showed that there was no difference in fluid flow in the eye between black and white patients with glaucoma. Read more about the aqueous dynamic and race study on the PubMed website.

    SLT laser and aqueous dynamic effects

    A study which showed that a laser technique lowers eye pressure by increasing the outflow but has no significant effect on the overall flow rate. Read more about the SLT laser study on the Ovid website.

    EyeWatch study

    The study aims to test a new medical device (eyeWatch) used in filtering surgery for the treatment of glaucoma.


    The study evaluates the intraocular pressure lowering efficacy and safety of Bimatoprost sustained-release biodegradable implants after administration.

    Hydrus 4

    The study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Hydrus aqueous implant for lowering intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.

    Aqueous dynamics MicroPulse laser

    A study on the effect of transscleral MicroPulse laser cyclophotocoagulation on aqueous dynamics in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.


    A study comparing surgical approaches to treat black African and African-Caribbean patients with uncontrolled primary open angle glaucoma.

    Treatment of advanced glaucoma (TAGS)

    A study comparing primary medical treatment with primary augmented trabeculectomy for people with newly diagnosed advanced glaucoma.

    LiGHT trial

    A study on high-related quality of life in two treatment pathways for open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension: selective trabeculoplasty versus conventional medical therapy.

    Primary tube versus trabeculectomy

    Primary tube versus trabeculectomy (PTVT) study.

    Mercury 3

    A study assessing the safety and ocular hypotensive efficacy of PG324 ophthalmic solution compared to GANFORT.

    Corneal endothelium Cell Density in Glaucoma

    A longitudinal study to monitor corneal endothelial cell density over 3 years in glaucoma and ocular hypertension patients.

  • Cataracts

    Financial modelling of femtosecond laser cataract surgery

    A study which looked at the financial viability of a laser assisted cataract surgery within the NHS. The study found no financial or time-saving benefit for the surgery. Read more about the finanical modelling study on the BMJ website.

    Refractive outcomes after limbal relaxing incisions or femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy

    A study to compare two methods of surgery to reduce astigmatism during cataract surgery. It showed that the femtosecond arcuate keratotomy method had benefits for patients over the other technique. Read more about the study on the PubMed website.

    Comparing femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery vs conventional phacoemulsification surgery

    A study which compared a laser assisted cataract surgery to standard cataract surgery. It confirmed that there was no significant difference between the two treatments. Read more about the study on the PubMed website.

  • Vitreoretinal


    A study of adjunctive intraocular and periocular steroid versus standard treatment in eyes undergoing vitreoretinal surgery for open globe trauma.


    A study of vitrectomy plus standard care intravitreal ranibizumab injections versus standard care in patients with centre involving diabetic macular oedema.
