No excuse for abuse

Treating staff with dignity and respect

We are here to provide safe, compassionate care for everyone. In return, we expect all patients and visitors to treat our staff with dignity and respect.

Abusive, threatening or violent behaviour is never acceptable.

Most people treat our teams with kindness and understanding. However, some staff experience unacceptable behaviour while doing their job in hospitals, community settings or over the phone. This has a real impact on their safety and wellbeing, and the care we provide.

What is not acceptable

  • Verbal abuse or offensive language.
  • Threatening or intimidating behaviour.
  • Discrimination or harassment based on race, sexuality, ability, faith or gender.
  • Making sexual comments about someone's body, clothing or appearance.
  • Physical violence or assault.

If something is not right

We know that coming into hospital can be stressful, and people may feel anxious, upset or distressed. Some behaviours may also be linked to illness or underlying conditions.

If you feel upset, we'll always aim to respond with compassion and provide appropriate support.

However, everyone has the right to feel safe. Our staff must be treated with dignity and respect at all times.

If you are unhappy with your care or experience, please speak to a member staff. We will listen and work with you to resolve the issue.

How we respond to abuse

We take incidents of abuse seriously and will take action where appropriate. This may include:

  • involving security
  • contacting the police
  • restricting access to services in line with NHS guidance

Our priority is to keep patients, visitors and staff safe.

Reporting violence or abuse

If you experience or witness abuse:

  • tell a member of staff straight away so they can help and take action
  • you can contact the police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency

By treating each other with kindness and respect, we can help keep our services safe and welcoming for everyone.
