Reducing our environmental impact

Building healthier communities

Our surroundings shape our health. Clean air and access to green spaces aren't just nice to have. They're important for our mental and physical wellbeing. Air pollution is linked to lung and heart disease, cancer, dementia and fetal development issues, while green spaces offer room to exercise and connect with nature.

In Lambeth and Southwark, rates of respiratory conditions are higher than average across London and England. That's why we're committed to achieving the NHS ambition to reach net zero by 2045, which will help us prevent illness and reduce health inequalities.

Our commitment to sustainability

We are working to protect our environment and improve the health and wellbeing of our patients, visitors and staff.

  • We're using greener transport options like drone deliveries and e-bikes.
  • We're switching to reusable alternatives wherever possible, reducing our reliance on non-essential single-use items.
  • We're creating green spaces for health including the garden at Lambeth Community Care Centre, used by amputee patients as part of their therapy and rehabilitation.

Drones speed up blood tests

Guy’s and St Thomas’ was the first trust in London to trial drone deliveries for blood samples. Lightweight commercial drones can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 99% compared to non-electric cars, and speed up blood sample analysis.

“This service is a great example of how the innovation and vision of a London startup has brought much-needed investment from across the globe to tackle important health issues facing our city” said Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, Howard Dawber.
