Data plays a pivotal role in empowering healthcare providers to deliver more precise, efficient, patient-centred and ultimately higher quality services.
We work with academic and commercial partners to not only derive valuable insights from our clinical data that can identify opportunities for improvement or identify new diagnostic patterns, but also to develop the next generation of healthcare products, including pharmaceutical therapies or artificial intelligence.
We know that there are concerns about how NHS data is used and shared. We only share anonymised patient data when there is a clear value in doing so. We have several approaches for different circumstances, each of which firmly adheres to the principles of clear patient benefit, legal compliance, strong information governance, patient engagement and fair value to the state.
The Guy's Cancer cohort, a collaboration between King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas', represents a crucial tool for driving research into new cancer diagnostics and therapies.
It grants ethical approval for the use of routinely collected, anonymised data for both patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer and those who have been investigated for a potential diagnosis of cancer.
Data for conducting clinical research
All clinical research performed in the NHS is subject to the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research. This includes research on anonymised patient data. Outside the cancer field, where we have dedicated ethics approval and governance processes for broader sharing, partners wishing to receive data to use in a research study should first seek approval from the Health Research Authority (HRA). Commercial sponsors should discuss their study with King's Health Partners Clinical Trials Office and non-commercial sponsors with the research and development team. Partners may alternatively wish to explore the 'analytics as a service' route.
Commercial data sharing for non-research purposes
Sharing of anonymised, routine care data for non-research purposes such as feasibility assessments and product evaluations.
Analytics as a service
Guy's and St Thomas' has dedicated ethical approval and governance processes, enabling our staff and King's College London researchers to use anonymised, routine care data for research and non-research purposes where there is a patient benefit.
We can support partners to have their healthcare questions answered by Guy's and St Thomas' using anonymised data.
