Overview

Dental psychology

We provide support for people who are very anxious about visiting the dentist. We also treat people who have a condition that affects their face, mouth or jaw.

We work with other departments in the dental service, particularly:

We often see people who want help with:

  • feeling anxious about visiting the dentist
  • persistent gagging
  • long-term pain in the mouth, jaw or face
  • burning mouth syndrome
  • temporomandibular disorder (TMD)
  • autoimmune mouth conditions

We also provide assessments for people who may have orthognathic surgery.

The service is led by psychologists. Psychologists are health professionals who help people manage their emotional concerns. They do not prescribe medicines.

We also work with other members of the dental team including:

  • dentists
  • nurses
  • dental hygienists
