Making a referral

We accept referrals from consultants and GPs.

Who can be referred

Patients referred to us must:

  • be over 18
  • have been in pain for more than 6 months
  • have pain that is severe enough to prevent them working or taking part in other daily activities
  • not need or have surgery and other treatments planned that might impact their ability to take part
  • be open and committed to the programme and willing to take part in a group

We do not accept referrals for patients:

  • who are under 18
  • whose pain has no significant impact on their functioning
  • who cannot control their use of injectable analgesia, medicated lollies or oral liquid opioids
  • with addiction or substance abuse problems (including alcohol and cannabis)
  • with moderate to severe cognitive impairment
  • who cannot move around on their own or fully self-care. A case management service is available for patients who need tests done prior to attending
  • with complexities that would it difficult to take part on our courses. These may need addressing before or instead of our courses. This can include:
    • severe depression
    • suicidal behaviour
    • psychosis
    • interpersonal difficulties
    • social circumstances
    • who cannot take part in English. We may offer individual sessions instead
