We have one of the largest and most experienced commercial teams in the NHS. We're engaged in a number of commercial ventures that support the work of the Trust. This allows us to make service improvements and generate income that is reinvested in services for our NHS patients.
Our commercial services team oversees a broad portfolio that includes:
- business development, partnerships with industry and managed service agreements
- bids and tenders
- commercial education and events
- commercial legal
- retail services
- other commercial activities
The business development team supports the Trust to identify, develop and deliver new and innovative partnerships with industry to:
- enhance patient care
- promote efficiencies
- achieve value for money
We support clinical services in responding to bids and tenders, either to retain clinical services or to deliver new NHS services. Guy’s and St Thomas’ has a wealth of experience in developing partnerships with industry and the NHS, as well as delivering managed services. The team works closely with experts from across Guy’s and St Thomas’ to run events in a wide range of key clinical areas, including:
- cardiology

- pharmacy
- dermatology
We work hard to make sure that we create the highest quality learning and development courses and conferences, which is why all appropriate courses are accredited with continuing professional development points (CPD).

The commercial legal team acts as a cross cutting internal legal team supporting the delivery of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s commercial and operational strategy by maximising value and managing risk across the Trust wide commercial contracts portfolio.
Our key delivery pillars focus on:
- complex legal structuring, negotiation and advice
- commercial legal and risk infrastructure
- coordination of external legal advisory
Guy’s and St Thomas’ provide a range of goods and services through our retail outlets to meet the everyday needs of our patients, visitors and staff. We are continually reviewing what we can offer our patients, their families, carers and staff to enhance what is already available. The Trust also hosts aerials for a number of mobile telecommunications providers.

Other commercial activities
Guy's and St Thomas' has a range of other commercial activities.
Guy's and St Thomas' is involved in developing new testing protocols and testing structures for genomics, both for cancer and rare diseases. This involves working with industry partners to further develop and enhance genetic testing.

SYNLAB UK and Ireland are our partners, together with King's College Hospital, in an NHS/industry joint venture, providing our Synnovis pathology services in support of our care for patients.
SYNLAB is Europe's leading medical diagnostic service provider. They are specialist pathology providers and bring extensive global experience and expertise in setting up, transforming and running testing and diagnostic services.
SYNLAB also partner the NHS in 3 other pathology joint ventures.

Other services
HCA at Guy's Cancer Centre
Our state-of-the-art Cancer Centre at Guy’s generates income from a partnership with HCA Healthcare UK, part of the world's largest private hospital group, who occupy the top 4 floors of the Cancer Centre.
HCA operate nearby London Bridge Hospital and have expanded their existing cancer care capacity by working with us.
HCA have also been an important partner during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing us to make sure patients continued to receive lifesaving surgery when NHS services were most stretched.
Procurement
We host the NHS London Procurement Partnership (NHS LPP) and also provide a range of procurement advice and support to other NHS providers.
Our team won the urban logistics category at the 2021 Supply Chain Excellence Awards. The award was for their pilot of a river cargo service from our supply chain hub in Dartford to Guy's Hospital.
This river cargo service is part of a wider programme supporting our sustainability strategy. Other initiatives include:

MR physics
Magnetic resonance plays an important role in diagnostic healthcare. Clinical scientists provide the MR physics support to develop new and existing MR techniques in an effective, safe and timely manner.
We provide the following services:
- MR safety expert support
- MR safety audits
- aid with protocol development for existing clinical protocols and advanced MR techniques, such as MR-guided breast biopsy and interventional MRI
- advice on the procurement and upgrade of MRI systems
- acceptance testing and quality assurance
- RF cage testing
- acoustic noise measurements
- education in MRI physics
- MR safety testing for medical devices
