Using a CryoCuff after a total knee replacement

This information explains how to use a cold pack called a CryoCuff® at home after a total knee replacement operation.

A CryoCuff is a lightweight device that you can carry easily. It is filled with water, which you allow to cool in the fridge. You then wrap the device around your knee.

The mixture of pressure and cold eases pain and swelling. This helps you to recover more quickly.

If you have any questions, please speak to the physiotherapist caring for you.

When you leave hospital

When you leave hospital, you need to take the CryoCuff home in the plastic wallet that we give you. It should be full of water but does not have to be cold.

At home, you keep the CryoCuff in the plastic wallet. You put the device in your fridge and keep it there until you want to use it.

How to use your CryoCuff

Here are some instructions for using your CryoCuff:

  1. Remove the CryoCuff from your fridge and take it out of the plastic wallet.
  2. Wrap the CryoCuff around your knee with the plastic spout towards you.
  3. Fasten the Velcro® straps, so that they are comfortable but secure.
  4. Leave the CryoCuff on your knee for 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Remove the CryoCuff by undoing the Velcro straps.
  6. Put the CryoCuff in the plastic wallet and then back in the fridge.
  7. Use the CryoCuff on your knee for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times each day as needed.

Benefits of using a CryoCuff

A CryoCuff helps to ease pain and swelling after your total knee replacement. If your pain and swelling are controlled, you will be able to:

  • move around freely
  • do your exercises

Safety precautions

To protect your own safety, it is important not to freeze the CryoCuff.

Important safety reminder

Do not put the CryoCuff in the freezer or ice compartment. If you put the CryoCuff on your knee when it is frozen, this could cause serious ice burns to your skin.

Freezing the CryoCuff might also damage it.

Looking after your CryoCuff

Here is some guidance about looking after your CryoCuff:

Do

  • keep the CryoCuff clean at all times
  • only use washing-up liquid to clean the CryoCuff
  • leave the CryoCuff in the plastic wallet when it is not in use

Don't

  • do not use cleaning products that contain chemicals like bleach on the CryoCuff, as they can damage it
