Respiratory research

About our research

Respiratory diseases contribute to significant levels of poor health and are common causes of hospital admission in the UK. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of specialist services to patients suffering from respiratory diseases including asthma, COPD (smoking related lung disease; formerly known as emphysema and chronic bronchitis), interstitial lung disease and respiratory failure. In addition to providing high quality clinical care, these services are actively involved in medical research.

The research conducted within respiratory medicine covers projects designed and coordinated by the Trust as well as collaborating with projects run from other NHS and non-NHS research partners. The department has an active patient and public involvement group that helps to review and revise these projects, so they can best meet the aims of the patients they are intended to benefit.

Current studies

We are currently looking for volunteers to take part in the following studies. Click on the headings below to find out more about each study and see if you might be eligible to take part and help us with our research.

  • NIVO

Data transfer: NHS Digital and Wales Informatics Services

Between 2016-2018 this hospital was involved in the NIVO study. This research study looked at patients with COPD who required ventilation.

As part of this study Northumbria Healthcare plan to transfer identifiable data to NHS Digital and NHS Wales Informatics Service. This will allow us to accurately assess all readmissions and outcomes for patients in the study and improve the study results. NHS digital already gather this information, and the data they send back to Northumbria Healthcare will be anonymised.
This study is being coordinated by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

If you have any questions or want more information about the transfer of this data, please email
