Thrombosis clinic

This clinic is for people with a diagnosis of blood clots (thrombosis) or have a risk of blood clots (thrombophilia). During the clinic, we will:

  • assess your symptoms following a blood clot
  • review your treatment for the blood clot and discuss if you need long-term preventative medicines
  • explore any other medical issues

Patients who have been diagnosed with a blood clot in hospital will have follow-up in a thrombosis clinic. We are able to see patients referred from other hospitals for a specialist opinion who have:

  • recurrent blood clots
  • antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
  • blood clots at unusual sites
  • inherited thrombophilia

Pregnancy thrombosis clinic

This clinic is for women who have had a recent or previous blood clot or at risk of blood clots during a future pregnancy. We are able to provide specialist care for women with antiphospholipid syndrome.

Cancer-associated thrombosis clinic

This clinic is for people who have cancer or receiving anti-cancer treatment that have had a recent or previous blood clot. We consider treatments with regards to your complication risk and on-going anti-cancer treatment. We work closely with your cancer doctor to provide personalised care.

Respiratory-thrombosis clinic

This clinic is for people who have had a previous pulmonary embolism and have on-going shortness of breath. We are able to provide specialist testing for blood clot-related complications and advise if you need more treatment or physiotherapy.

This clinic is for people who have had previous blood clots and/or on long-term anticoagulation. The nursing team are able to provide care with specialist blood test monitoring and help manage your anticoagulation when  having any operations.

Pharmacist DOAC clinic

This clinic is for people starting on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for atrial fibrillation as well as other conditions. Once stable on your anticoagulant, we are able to continue most patients care with their GP. The pharmacist team are able to provide specialist monitoring and follow-up care.

Vitamin K anticoagulation (VKA) monitoring clinic

This clinic is run by the anticoagulation nursing team with our health assistants. At your first appointment we'll discuss what taking warfarin involves.

We provide regular blood test (INR) monitoring and advise you on your medication dosage until your next appointment. We have a self-tester clinic for patients and for people needing warfarin management when having operations.

We may see you at a different location for blood test monitoring. We will tell you before coming to your appointment.

Some appointments for our vitamin K antagonist (VKA) monitoring clinic may be virtual. You may receive advice on your drug dose and a follow-up appointment by email, a phone call or on MyChart.

We do blood tests in the department via a booked appointment system. Blood tests include routine bloods and specialised bleeding disorder testing.
